6A Identifying Opportunities in Economic and Regulatory Trends

Economic Opportunities

1.  Tax Policy That Encourages Growth

I found this opportunity by keeping up with the daily news and current trends around the world. A tax policy that will focus on making smart decisions for our government will improve our nation as a whole. The costly loopholes that we are taking in now can be eliminated by overhauling the tax codes. Following a simple policy of cutting and investing can grow our economy and help our government as a whole. The opportunity is there for our government and as long as they follow and invest in activities that will grow the nation then it will succeed.

2. Spend on Public Works

I found this opportunity by watching the news daily and keeping up with the media recently. I came up with this opportunity because it just makes complete sense. Public work helps the government mainly because increasing public works like building more roads and bridges increases jobs which helps the economy. For example 1 million dollars spent on public works can create almost 20,000 jobs. This is something that America did to prevent the Great Depression and we should bring that back and increase public works.

Regulatory Opportunities

1. Paid Sick Leave

I found this opportunity online just looking at the news and it is slowly starting to become mandatory to pay for sick leave. This is something that has been introduced in Congress and have gained traction. This opportunity is something that has already been basically established by big businesses but for local businesses some people may say it will be a problem but I think it is a good opportunity for the people and the companies. I see this as an opportunity because my mom's job gets paid leave and I see how good of a relationship her and her boss.

2. Alachua County raising tobacco age to 21

I found this opportunity when I saw it in the newspaper. This will take place fully in nine months. Overall I do not like the decision to do this and I formed the opportunity because I think the main age that tobacco appeals to is between the age 18 and 21. The average customer especially in a college town won't be above the age of 21. I saw this opportunity because I am not 21 so someone who is over the age of 21 may not respond to it because it doesn't really matter.

5A Identifying Local Opportunities

1. "Main Street post office dropbox burglarized"

The problem in this article is that this is something that is making the people lazier and lazier. As a whole it is making everyone less social.

This story describes how Desantis wants to expand private school scholarships. One of the main problems focussed in this article is that he is forgetting about the students in public schools and that he should focus on all children as a whole. This is a problem for the people because this can cause uproar from the parents who have kids that go to public schools.

Forming an Opportunity Belief

Every day college students are looking to go to the library to study. On campus there are really only two main libraries and once finals week comes around it gets crazy to the point where you have to reserve a room like a couple days before. The lack of library space causes students to end up studying in their dorms or in their common rooms on the floor of their dorm. This can create a lot of distraction for these kids because then they have to go through the schedule of their roommate too if they are working in their own room. If there was more library space and the hours were extended throughout the whole semester this wouldn't be a problem. This is an unmet need for the students at University of Florida. Personally I like to work in a place that is quiet and I can get easily distracted so more seats or more hours that I can study in a quiet place would be extremely beneficial.

1. First Year Business Student

Have you experienced any problems with the Libraries hours or seating?
"Yes one of the main issues is when I am working late and basically get cut off due to the short hours."

How often does this problem occur?
"Whenever  I go to the library late at night I feel like I always get cut off and during finals week the library is always so packed so I end up having to study in my room."

How are you dealing with this problem?
"Personally I try to get to the library during that day or study when my roommate is in class and I am in the room alone."

Is this solution working?
"I am still getting my work done which is good but I would still prefer better hours."

2. Fifth Year Graduate Student

Being a Grad student have any problems with the Libraries?
"They have designated areas for grad students but the hours are the same and I wish both libraries were 24/7 throughout the whole semester."

When did you start to notice this problem?
"Honestly this year was where it really effected me because it is my toughest year of college and I need to spend as much time I can studying."

How are you getting around this problem?
"I try and study as much as I can during the available hours but once it gets busy I book rooms in advance."

Is this working?
"Booking a room in advance has been substantial but once it get towards finals week I feel like it will become tougher and tougher to get a spot."

3. Third Year Off-Campus Student

Although you live off campus do you still find any problems with the libraries?
"I actually spend all my time studying on campus because I can't focus much at home, but the libraries on campus should add another building designated just for studying and a quiet place since the ones here are extremely busy."

How long ago did you first notice this?
"The past two years is when it hit because living in an off campus house with 4 roommates is tough to study in compared to my dorm my freshman year."

How do you avoid this problem?
"I try and do as much studying at my fraternity's house since we have a study room there."

Is this solution working for you?
"Right now my grades and everything are good so yeah."

Reflection:
Over the course of the day I interviewed students of different ages and qualities to make sure the results are factual. The one main thing that all three of these students agreed on was that the libraries should be opened longer and more space should be available. I learned how this problem exists basically on a daily basis for them and I think I will be more aware of it daily.

Summary:
This opportunity is still something that should be fixed by the University of Florida and these interviews support that. Based on this interviews this solution is stronger than it was prior because of how much it is actually needed. The lack of space to study that the University offers to students must be addressed. Feedback from students like this is extremely important to fix issues like this.

Entrepreneurship Story

Right at the beginning of High School me and my brother created our own Landscaping business. The company was called Arcuri Cousins Landscaping because the majority of my cousins also helped with our business. We started out going door to door asking our fellow neighbors if they wanted us to maintain their lawn and any other maintenance that they need. We started with a few houses based on sending out flyers and stuff and ended up with around 15 houses to mow and weed whack every week. Although this wasn't that much it still taught me how to run a business a little. Originally when we started we would just take all the profit and split into how many guys were working at the time but over the years we learned to put some away or advertise with some of it by buying shirts and more business cards to add on to our customers. Not only did we just cut and maintain lawns but we would also hedge bushes, mulch, and when the winter came around we would snow blow and snow shovel. the reason why I took this class was to see if I had the traits to be an entrepreneur in the future but to also learn more about.
